PMSBY Enrolments Surpass 51 Crore in April, Marking 443% Growth Over 10 Years

The Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), the government’s flagship accident insurance scheme, has recorded a major milestone with cumulative enrolments crossing 51.06 crore in April 2025, according to a statement by the Ministry of Finance on May 9. This reflects a staggering 443% increase since March 2016, when enrolments stood at 9.40 crore.

PMSBY, launched in May 2015, offers accident insurance coverage of ₹2 lakh for an annual premium of just ₹20. The scheme is aimed at providing affordable insurance to individuals between the ages of 18 and 70 who hold a savings bank account.

Sharing the update on social media platform X, the finance ministry said, “PM Suraksha Bima Yojana! Cumulative enrolments under PMSBY have risen by 443 percent, from 9.40 cr in March 2016 to 51.06 cr in April 2025. Affordable security at just Rs 20 per year.”

The scheme has gained significant traction among the unorganised and low-income sectors, thanks to its low premium and easy accessibility. PMSBY is implemented through banks and insurance companies in coordination with the finance ministry
